Set up the toolbar

The toolbar parks against one edge of the screen, with only a small three-dot handle showing. Hover the handle and the whole toolbar slides out; move away and it slides back. It holds every tool and setting, whether or not you’re drawing.

How it behaves

• Parked, only the handle shows. By default it sits on the right edge, halfway down.
• Hover the handle and the bar slides out after a short pause.
• Move away and it slides back after another short pause.
• Start drawing and it comes out briefly, so you can see where it’s parked.

The toolbar can’t be dragged. Its position is a setting, so it stays put when you plug in a monitor or change resolution.

Only the handle and the bar itself respond to the pointer. The rest of that screen edge works as normal.

Change its settings

Click the pen in the menu bar, choose Preferences… and go to Toolbar.

Notes on the settings

• Bar and handle sit at uses words that match the edge: Left, Centre and Right on the top edge; Top, Middle and Bottom on a side edge.
• Columns only apply to the left and right edges. On a side edge the controls wrap two to a row by default, so the bar doesn’t run most of the way down the screen. The top edge is always a single row.
• Handle inset moves the handle away from the corner. It’s ignored when the bar is centred, because then the handle and the bar share a centre line.
